Abstract

Since its founding in 1984 as the continuation of Zoological Magazine (1888–1983) and Annotationes
Zoologicae Japonenses (1897–1983), the Zoological Society of Japan, one of the country's oldest scientific
societies, has published Zoological Science, a unique and prestigious international journal in zoology. The
range of animal species that members of the Society and journal authors use in their research may be one of
the most notable aspects of both organizations. Fish may have made contributions to nearly every field of study
and publication, including behavioral biology, biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, diversity
and evolution, ecology, endocri-nology, genetics, immunology, morphology, neurobiology, phylogeny,
reproductive biology, and taxonomy. Many fish species have been used as model animals in zoological science
study due to the recent development of contemporary molecular genetic techniques in biology. The writers of
this Special Issue, who range in age from junior to senior zoologists, have contributed a variety of works in
zoological science using a range of fish species.
