Abstract

Current pharmaceutical industry business models need to evolve due to global manufacturing,
consumer, and regulatory changes. The old centralized batch manufacturing paradigm, high-risk
capital-intensive scale-up, and intrinsically high research costs are the main areas of concern.
Inkjet printing is one of the new technologies being investigated to drastically change the end-to
end supply chain and pharmaceutical production processing. Before looking at the business
environment influencing the investigation of inkjet printing in the pharmaceutical industry, this
article gives a quick overview of inkjet printing technologies and their existing uses in production.
After that, we look at the trends in pharmaceutical printing that have been documented in the
literature. Next, we discuss the scientific issues and difficulties associated with this technology's
introduction. We show that a wide variety of pharmaceutical types and printing systems are the
focus of research activity. In order to reduce this complexity, we demonstrate that by classifying
research findings according to targeted business models and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
(API) chemistry, we can effectively translate a selected medicine to inkjet manufacturing and have
a more coherent approach to comparing research findings.
